Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843 - 1907) from the age of six he received regular piano lessons from the mother. At the age of nine he began to design his own compositions. From his early days, many pieces of piano have been preserved, which were later partly published in the complete edition. In his interest in music and composition, the teachers met with mockery and cynicism. Grieg in 1903 at his school time: "His roughness, his coldness, his materialism - all this was so frightening for my nature".

He undertook voyages throughout Europe as a pianist and conductor. He often accompanied his wife, who was a soprano. From 1880 to 1882, Grieg was the conductor of the orchestra of the music society "Harmonie" in Bergen. The two "Peer-Gynt Suites", the Suite "From Holberg's Time" and the Piano Concerto are still very popular today.

Edvard Grieg was awarded the honorary doctorate in the field of music twice, in May 1894 by the University of Cambridge (beside Camille Saint-Saëns and Peter Tchaikovsky) and in May 1906 by the University of Oxford.

The "Edvard Grieg Oil field", which was discovered in 2007 off the coast of Norway and the drilling platform built on it, was named after the composer.
