  George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) Gershwin, who was about 20 years old at the time, later claimed to have conceived the song 1918 within fifteen minutes of a bus ride in Manhattan and then completed it in his apartment. Partially, he was a parody of Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home". In 1920, Swanee was on the US charts for 18 weeks, of which nine were in position one. It sold a million copies of the notes and about two million records.
  
  The song became Gershwin's first hit and at the same time the most commercially successful of his career; The royalties allowed him to focus more on his work on theater and film. Swanee was covered in the following years by a number of musicians and bands, including Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Dave Brubeck, Aretha Franklin, and others. Swanee is not to be confused with Stephen Foster's "Swanee River" (actually: Old Folks at Home).
  
  While George Gershwin worked in Hollywood on the score of the film music of "The Goldwyn Follies", he collapsed on the wing and died on July 11, 1937 at 10:35 am on a brain tumor.
